The short, one week course is suitable for electricians who have not carried out inspection and testing since training, or who require update training before progressing. It is also suitable for those with some experience of inspection and testing of electrical installations, such as those entering the industry from other engineering sectors or those working in allied trades.

Course Description

– IET Guidance Note 3, Inspection and Testing (ISBN 978-1-83953-236-8)

It is also strongly recommended that you have a copy of: 

 IET On-Site Guide (ISBN 978-1-83953-227-6) 

– NAPIT EICR Codebreakers (ISBN 978-8382214-6-1) 

– Exam Preparation: Initial and Periodic Electrical Inspection and Testing (2391): Level 3 Award (Electrical Regulations).

This qualification delivers the specialist knowledge and skills you need, including appropriate legislation, inspection and testing techniques, completing and issuing certificates or reports and understanding of results and measurements. 

City College Plymouth will provide all tools and equipment required for your training. We offer a free breakfast for all of our students and short course delegates will be given a free lunch voucher to use in our Food Court.

The course covers:

  • – fundamentals of initial verification
  • – safe working procedures
  • – initial inspection
  • – test instrument calibration and accuracy
  • – test procedures: continuity, insulation, polarity and earth electrode
  • – test procedures: earth fault loop impedance, RCD and prospective fault current
  • – certification
  • – calculations for resistance of copper conductors and temperature correction for earth fault loop impedance values.

This qualification is approved for candidates aged 18 or above.
It would be expected that you will have a basic knowledge and understanding of electrical science and principles and experience of electrical installation work either within the electrical contracting industry or an allied trade. 

Assessment consists of a both practical and theory-based test.

Fees quoted apply to courses starting in the academic year 2023/24 (August 2023 – July 2024). There may be a slight increase in fees for courses starting 2024/25.
